Warmth in Bloom | Crochet Fashion Scarf and Earwarmer Headband

In this cold winter months, keeping warm can also be fun and stylish.  When I saw this great pattern from a magazine, I immediately wanted to make it. {That involved of course, buying the magazine too, :p }  Before this, I have only crocheted headbands based out of a video tutorial on YouTube.  The tutorial was so informative and basic, it carried me through every little step that made it easy to follow.  Watching the tutor do the steps assured me that what I was doing was right.  This is my first time attempting a project out of a written pattern.  You might imagine how intimidated I was.  But this cute scarf is too pretty to pass on.  I had to try.

Every so often, I second guess myself: "Does this look okay to you?"  I asked my hubby.  Of course he would proudly say, "It looks beautiful!"  I'd take it, as if he knew exactly... er, anything at all about crochet... :-)  I would actually feel reassured and I'd move on pleased.

Weaving Warm Hugs for the Cold Winter Days 2

Another year is almost gone, one other is fast approaching.  We hear it all too often, “Time goes by fast…” or “Where have all the time gone?” I hope that it has been a pleasant year for you, so far.

crochet headband

As the normal day to day passes by, we slowly welcome Old Man Winter, almost reluctantly, of course.  It’s cold.  Yes, for me, that is quite the top most reason.  {But a snow storm never made me lonely.  It's so pretty, how can one be so sad?} Fortunately, I found yet another hobby that will help weave out some nice warm hugs to keep warm – for the whole family and friends.

Weaving Warm Hugs for the Cold Winter Days

As the year goes well along, we entered a new season again... yup the dreaded winter months.  It's not all dark, cold and dreary though... snow is a sure beautiful delight.  In order to enjoy it, we have to keep ourselves bundled-up, all nice and toasty... so I thought of "weaving some warm hugs"... Okay, okay, it's not really weaving (yet), I tried my hand on crochet and here is what I came up with.  Decent job huh?

I saw a young girl wearing a crocheted ear warmer once and of course, I wanted one for myself.  Oh sorry, not that I'm covetous, or anything like that... just want to keep warm... lol... The price, though, didn't agree with me. "Make one?" A voice inside of me whispers. It presented a challenge to creativity, so, "why not?". "How hard can it be?" I thought... Hence, I used my Michael's Store discount coupon and bought me some yarn and hook... What do you think?

Here's a photo of the head band / ear warmer.  It is fastened with a button at the bottom... Oh my, that sounds weird doesn't it... hehehe.

I'll be posting the free pattern soon.  Cause you know?  I'm that cool, lol...

And here's the infinity scarf that I made.  Yellow?  Wasn't sure about it the first time, I thought it would be more of a spring or summer color.  Of course, it is... But why not for winter too?  It does a great job in cheering up a bland black outfit... (Yup, most of my winter coats are black :-)

I'm working on the pattern and will post as soon as it's done... I want to make sure it is easy to follow, lol... It was easy to make.  Writing the pattern, on the other hand, is a lot trickier. I'm enjoying crocheting so much that I may set up an online store.  Would anyone be interested?

Have a great day everyone!
May you be filled with love and hope.... and lots of warm hugs...

Baking My Way to a New Adventure

Naturally, when you have a nail art and beauty blog, you would try out new make-up, nail polish or new fashion trend, right?  Well, I kind-off take "trying something new" as the artsy-and-adventure rather than the beauty-and-fashion side.  This is tea related, afterall... And any food that goes with tea, for that matter {which is practically anything, right?} That's my excuse for deviating from nails and beauty hauls into my new adventure - Baking and Cake Decorating ;-)

As The Autumn Days Begin {2014}

What a lovely day indeed.  Though the wind blows hard and unsteady, the sun shines so brightly making an otherwise cold day into a nice, comfortable, beautiful day.

Two days ago was the first day of Autumn this year.  The day was announced by bleak winds and lightly overcast skies that necessitated digging out thick clothing from storage.  "It cannot be put off much longer,"  I told myself as I hesitantly put on a light winter jacket.  Then followed by a weak smile of disapproval: "Oh that just looks silly..." Hence comes a light fall jacket instead.  Regrets came afterwards when it fell short of keeping these little bones of mine warm.  So today I made sure I had the winters on - So glad to be wrong and the day turned out to be so lovely.

KONAD Stamping Nail Art | Haul

The days of summer were short and busy.  How did your summer go?
I must say, it was a very adventurous 'few weeks' indeed.  This last few weeks especially were full of many different activities.  And I am glad. I had my fill of wanderlust and great time with friends from near and far that now I look forward to quiet and slow days.  I would be lying if I say I am looking forward to winter.  My ever warm-blood could not stand the cold! But I could finally say: "I am ready for it!"  By that I mean, I have collected not just memories - I also collected lots of new polish bottles and nail art toys waiting for me to try. (That and some baking tools, learning and teaching a new language... arts and crafts...  Add that to a new job and my volunteer work = I am going to be really busy!  No time to mope and complain about the cold - or so I would hope.)

Take this lovely stamping nail art kit for example.  I am super excited to try it!

Salon Insta Gel Strips Starter Kit | Haul

One of the perks of working close to a shopping area is... shopping... lol.
Well, I mean, because it's on my way, I get to drop in quite often and check in on some sales.  Have you ever wondered what these insta gel strips are?  Well, I have and I wondered how they work but refuse to pay full price... Now I know what's in it... ;-)

Fingerpaints Gel Polish Starter Kit and LED Lamp | Updated Product Review

Here's my gel nails with the Hopewell Rocks in the background.
Hopewell Rocks is located at the Fundy National Park, New Brunswick

A girl going on vacation? How about a busy mom who toggles between the home, kids and maybe even a job outside the home?  Or a modern lady that's multi-tasking between so many activities that time seems to run out so fast? Manicure, what? Ain't no time for that??? Well, you probably heard about gel polish before? An instantly dry manicure that you can wear for up to two weeks - so they claim. It is also claims to have great shine and durability - you can wash the dishes, clean, do laundry,... They say, just go about your daily life and not worry a single bit about your nails?  But then you also hear about horror stories about how it damages the nails?!?  Hmmm....

To have gel polish nails or not?

OPI Polish Haul | My First OPI Polishes

These last few days of summer have proved to be truly, truly busy for me.  From hosting friends that visit from faraway, traveling to different cities to fulfill our volunteer work... keeping my own home and getting ready for the winter (yup, we have three chords of firewood to stack... ouch)... And there's also teaching my native language to English speakers who are also volunteers like us... Well, I don't know if these much activities can be summed up in a "nut-shell."  There's just too many things going on right now... It's crazy busy but I am also crazy motivated and happy.

Milady's Art and Science of Nail Technology (Book Review)

"An investment in knowledge always gives the best interest."
~Benjamin Franklin

Because you do a lot of nail art, friends and family might ask you to do their nails time and again.  Because you really really do love nail art, maybe you joined various nail art communities in different social media platforms such as this...  And then you come across ones who would ask you questions about nail care, how to stop nail biting (I get this a lot), how to grow longer healthier nails... this or that?... Are you one to get annoyed and say? "I don't know, I just do nail art...."  Or are you the other who feels flattered that someone thinks you know a great deal and actually trust your opinions? I prefer the latter.  Though I don't always know the answer, I try to be well-informed.

"A Treasury of Wit and Wisdom" from Reader's Digest | Book Review

In our day and age, more and more people shy away from reading. But in order to have wit and wisdom, that which are necessary for life, we can not solely rely upon videos and sound, we must train ourselves to read.  Of course, for it to be worthwhile, it has to be a meaningful book.  I totally recommend a quotation book.  Easy, short quotes are memorable... they make an impression.  Here's an example...

"Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes,
Art is knowing which ones to keep."
~ Scott Adams

"When inspiration does not come to me, I go halfway to meet it."
~ Sigmund Freud

"Creativity comes from trust.
Trust your instincts.  And never hope for more than you work."
~ Rita Mae Brown

"A woman is like a tea-bag.
You never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water."

The Diary - A Trustworthy Friend | How to get Started and Some Nail Art to Match

A blog, a diary, a journal ~ many of us keep account of the special events that happen in our life - whether it be sad or happy, exciting or mellow... Some of us share it publicly, to anyone who might be interested, such as a blog as this.  We hope to inspire or to inform... Some others share with only a chosen few, intimate friends or family.  And still some others choose it to be a personal companion, a trusted friend.  IN this article, we will focus on the kind of Diary that can be a trustworthy friend, an intimate confidant that one might choose to write for one's personal use only.

"Find a note book that you would like to keep for many years, or make your own.  Write accounts in it daily... short or long.. about anything that comes to your mind."  Said my English teacher way back in grade school.  In the Philippines, part of our school curriculum is learning the English Language.  In the effort of helping us express ourselves in the foreign language, my teacher encouraged the writing of a journal. It was very intimidating at first... but as I wrote it, I came to enjoy it... then I loved it.  I started with short, uninteresting sentences.  Later on, I was writing essays and poems.  Looking back, that journal and it's contents are very childish now.  But I still remember how my teacher complimented me specially for one of the poems I wrote.  I kept a journal ever since.

Whenever I see nail art design such as the newspaper nail art or a design that employs words in it, I always think about the Diary.  I'm sharing with you some designs that you might find inspiring as well as I hope to inspire you into writing a journal yourself.  You may click on the images for the full post from their original artists. Please continue to read...

Wanderlust | Julep Subscription Box August 2014

"I believe it's time for another adventure."

Wanderlust - noun, a strong innate desire to rove or travel about.
Origin: 1850–55; < German, equivalent to wander(n) to wander + Lust desire; see lust

I am guilty of being attracted to this box because of it's name "Wandelust."  If money was no object, I would surely travel the world... lol..  Although it's not the world right now, I still wish to rove about and see new places and experience new things. Why is summer in Canada sooooo short? :-(  So now, we try to do as much as possible and soak up the heat as much as we can.  I am so dreading the coming of winter right now... I am gearing up for the cold winter months by racking in some polishes, lol.  Then I'll sit by the warm fire and do nails... for now, I will show you the polishes that come in my mail faster than I could use them... wa ha ha!!!

Avon Metallic Effects | Haul Preview

While browsing through my Avon brochure this morning, I came across this new polish collection from Avon.  Of course, I had to order it!  ETA on my doorstep is on the 18th of August, 2014.  Wooh, excited.  I love shimmer polishes... In general, Avon polishes has not disappointed me yet.

This collection actually reminds me of the Three Wishes from Julep.  By the looks of it on photos, at least.  Guess, we'll find out once it arrives and I actually try it out.  Avon polishes though are a lot cheaper and bigger in size (12 ml versus 8 ml). Since this is a new release, each bottle cost $6.99 each.  In due time, this will be on sale for sure.  Polishes on the Avon catalogs are usually priced at $3.99.  I like to grab them early though, as special effects polishes are limited edition and once the stock is sold-out, it's out!!! You see, I kind of regret not ordering the entire Holo collection when it came out... Now they're not available anymore (sad).  So this time, I took the entire Metallic Effects collection :-)

WHITE POLISHES | Featuring EL PORTO from Cult Cosmetics

White polish is a basic color in nail art.  It can be used as a base to make your nail color pop even more - for gradients, water marble, french tips, saran wrap technique - just about anything!  Best of all, I like it for making designs, it matches with any color of polish you use as a base. My favorite design is the ever easy flower-dots that you'll see on my Jelly polish below. A small dot in the middle then five around it.  Drag each dot towards the center of the flower for some definition... a walah!  You'll have an instant bouquet of flowers. Really, white is a great main-stay for your nail art basic supplies.

“Women think of all colors except the absence of color.
I have said that black has it all. White too.
Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.”

~ Coco Chanel

"Born Pretty Store" | Nail Art Store Review

Born Pretty Store is an online store where you can find most anything that you need for nail arts - and more (make-up, jewelries... etc, etc)!  I first came acquainted with them on Ebay a few years ago where I purchased some nail art tools and I gave them a 5 star!  It was worth it.

Not too long ago, I purchased this "nail shield" directly from their website.  Initially, I sort of regretted that.  I thought that there's no way I could get a great service now as they are not scared of the Ebay rating system...  Much to my disappointment, the nail shield that was sent to me was not at all in good condition. You can see from the photos below.

Starlight - Cosmic from Avon {Holographic Polish} | Pretty Nails And Tea

"Starlight" ~ Beautiful Holographic polish from Avon.  At first, I wasn't so sure about this color.  It makes me think of darkened avocado pulp.  But it is undeniably pretty on the nails. I specially love how it sparkles even in the shade.  How much more so in the sun!  If you'd like to try Holo Polishes for less, try it from Avon.  I bought this for only $3.99 each.

Aurora Point | Cosmic from Avon {Holographic Polish}

I really enjoyed swatching the Avon Holographic Polishes.  I did a galaxy nail earlier featuring 4 different holographic colors from Avon.  Now I want to show you some swatches of these beautiful polishes one by one... Oh yeah, I went camera happy... Please check out these photos and see if you could blame me or not... Let's start with the purple one: Aurora Point

Green Nails and Some Time with Nature

“I felt my lungs inflate with the onrush of scenery
— air, mountains, trees, people.
I thought, "This is what it is to be happy.”
~Sylvia Plath "The Bell Jar"

Long weekends are fun especially when you are working full time... It's a happy long weekend day in New Brunswick, yay!!! We went hiking and kayaking with some friends... we thought it's great to spend time with nature as summer really goes by so fast here in NB and the winters can be so long.  So we are trying to get "stuff" done as much as we can before winter hits.

I thought green nails are appropriate for an intimate time with nature.  A few minutes before leaving the house, I painted them, ha ha! This is actually the first time in my nail art history that I'm wearing plain green nails! What do you think?

23 Designs from a Month Long Nail Art Challenge | OMD2

The nail art challenge that is sponsored by Jacqui of CraftyNails.com has now come to a close.  Did you participate in it as well?  If you did, how many challenges did you complete and which one is your favorite? Oooh, I'm so excited to know who won, yahoo!!! lol.

Out of the 31 days of challenge, I am quite proud that I was able to participate in 23.  For me, that's a wow!!! I frequently say, "I ain't got time for that!"  I was content at making nail-art that I would actually wear on a normal basis. But there are some nail art designs that I want to try.  I surprised myself with some of these nail arts.  Inspirations flows when we do put our heart into the work of our hands :-)  Here are some of the designs I made...

The prizes initially motivated me to do 'some' challenges.  If I could get at least one entry in, then I know I have a chance of winning that prize.  I would really love that prize.  You know?  Who does not want free stuff? ha! ha! But as I went along with it, I realized how it made my creative juices flowing.  It was almost a shame that the designs had to be taken off in less than a day to take on another challenge as I was quite pleased with the results.  Did you like them, by the way? Please continue reading to see all 23 designs :-)

KLUTZ Nail Style Studio | Nail Art Book Review

Late night but a friend needed a few things from the grocery store so hubby and I took her to the supermarket. While there, I decided to pick up a few necessities, myself.  On the way to the toiletries section, I passed by a clearance display with some books and gift ideas.  At the very bottom if the self was a book that seemed to have some polishes in it.  I knelt down to inspect and I was right! A nailart gift set for Tweens! Originally priced at $26.99, I came away with it for $16.99+tax.

Rainbow Bright | Tinseltown Nail's Neon Challenge with a fun Q&A

If you were a bottle polish, what brand and color would you be? Why?
If you can have superhero powers, what would it be and why?

These are just a few of the questions that Jamie of Tinseltown Nails asked...

Jamie of Tinseltown Nails just held a nail art contest with very generous prizes.  The theme was "NEONS".  I decided to do a rainbow nailart so that I could use many colorful and bright colors on the mani.  Earlier, Jamie very kindly sent me a beautiful nail art brush all the way from the Philippines.  She just saw me repost a contest where I wanted to win some nail art brushes.  Then without being asked, she went ahead and sent me this very nice brush (and more...) A rare spirit of generosity indeed.

So, to the best I can, I came up with a design where I could use the brush and neon colors. No, I am not good at drawing nor am I any close at all to painting.  It was a miracle brush {Just kidding...} I did my best on this one. I hope that Jamie and all of you, my dear Nail Art Friends like it.

Where to Get Nail Art Ideas and Inspirations

Where do you get your nail art inspirations from?  Where do I begin at making my own nailart?

For some of us who are new to nail arts, looking at already made designs can be helpful.  It can be easier to copy a design that's already made compared to creating our own ideas.  These can be found in some health and fashion magazines and books.  When I come across these, I clip them and save them in a folder for future reference.  Here's an example.

Sunset DragonFly | Nature | OMD2 Theme: Signature Design

Is there a design that you make every so often that when others see it they could exclaim: "That is so you!"  When it comes to nail art, I don't know if I found my niche design yet.  Truth be told, I like nude, unassuming colors on my nails.  Perhaps a sheer pink, as in french mani... or a plain, clear coat even!  But what fun is that? So, inspired by this little dragonfly, I present to you kind-of a signature style...

PrettyNailsAndTea | DragonFly

We live close by a park with a pretty little lake in it.  Hubby and I took a long walk a few evenings ago... I really liked the grass that grew on the side of the lake.  It reminds me of the riverbanks back home and the times where my sister and I would play around there and catch some dragon flies.  Okay, she and my other cousins would try to catch it.  I prefer just watching them and admiring their colors... We walked while we watched the sunset grace the skies.  Turning the atmosphere into a parade of yellow to red colors.  What a delight...

Poolside Collection | Julep July 2014

Pretty Nails and Tea | July 2014 | Julep | Poolside Collection

Hmmm, just wanting to share my selections for July 2014 from the Julep Poolside collection.  It's that time again when Julep offers the 'window' for selecting what you would like to receive in your monthly box.  That window is now open for August.  I was a little disappointed that this window is already open when I haven't received my July box in the mail yet.  I almost forgot what I got in my July box until I revisited this draft that I made last month.

Outdoor Mani with Flowers and Seashells | OMD2 Theme: Outdoors (Flashback Friday)

Ah, How I do love the summer heat... The sun is shining, the flowers are in bloom, the ocean feels warmer... people look happier.

Flowers and Nails | PrettyNailsAndTea.blogspot.ca

Hubby and I took a very nice walk on Sunday evening.  I was a little worried that we went out late and that the sun would soon be gone.  Alas, it was 9:30 at night when it started to go down.  No beautiful sunset that night, too cloudy.  Yet, it was great.  I was able to snap some pictures of beautiful flowers along the way, we chatted with some friends, relaxed on the sand... and collected clams.  Yup, not just seashells, live ones!!!

On my nails today is a nail wrap that I purchased from Michael's CraftStore here in Canada.  They have the sparing nail art supplies and I saw this one on sale for $1.00 Cad each, can't beat that, right?  I thought it's the perfect opportunity to try these nail wraps. There were two designs available.  Since there is a Doticure theme in the OMD2 Nail Art challenge, I decided to use the one with the polka-dots ;)

The Fox Funky French for OMD2

Funky French | PrettyNailsAndTea

I bought this pretty little fox from +eBay and it served as my inspiration for my Funky French today. I actually have a fox with gold linings instead of this which has silver.  That was why I had the golden base.  But in the end of my mani, I inadvertently stuck this one instead...  Oh well, I think it still turned out real nice, don't you think?
